University Hospitals Paramedic Program

MCCTC Adult Career Center has partnered with University Hospitals to host the UH Paramedic Program. All enrolled students will attend UH classes at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center.

The Paramedic education program at University Hospital is committed to preparing high-quality individuals to be effective and compassionate paramedics in accordance with the standards established by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the State of Ohio. A paramedic is a highly trained healthcare professional that works in emergency medical situations. Paramedics provide advanced levels of care for medical emergencies and trauma. The majority of paramedics work for public and private emergency medical service ambulances, emergency response vehicles, fire departments or in specialized mobile intensive care units. Some paramedics may undertake hospital-based roles, such as hospital Intensive Care Units, Critical Care Units, and Emergency Departments.

Paramedics can perform as field practitioners, providing extensive out-of-hospital treatment and diagnostic services under the medical control of a physician and underwritten medical protocol.

Paramedics can provide:

  • Advanced Life Support monitoring, and defibrillation
  • 12 lead interpretation
  • External cardiac pacing
  • Cardiac medication administration
  • Chest needle decompression
  • IV access including intraosseous administration
  • Cricothyrotomy
  • Tracheal Intubation
