What’s Your Story?
It is often said that everybody, and every place, has a story. The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center Adult Career Center is no different. Our story includes everything from the industry credential programs to talented instructors, to the absolute best part of our story–the success of our students.
MCCTC Adult Career Center’s story starts with career training programs that offer industry-recognized credentials and are designed so our students can complete them in less than one year. Our current credential programs include: Culinary and Restaurant Management, Medical Assistant, Medical Office Specialist, Emergency Medical Technician, Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Pharmacy Technician. Our programs can be intense because they focus on preparing you to successfully enter the work force and to sit for industry-recognized credentials. Sean Kushma, Culinary and Restaurant Management Instructor, put it in the most basic terms when he said, “when you graduate from our school, you’re going to have the tools you need to work that day.”
The MCCTC Adult Career Center story continues with instructors who take pride in their field and what they teach. Our instructors are invested in the success of each student. Passion, dedication and experience…these are the words that describe the instructors you will encounter. Jodi Glass, Student Recruiter, will tell you “our instructors know the field they are teaching. These are people that have worked in the field or are working in the field. These are people from our communities. These are people that care about the field they are teaching–they have a passion for it!” Gina Dermotta, Medical Office Specialist Instructor, is a prime example as she has been working in the medical profession for nearly three decades. Gina says, “I love teaching students! It gives me the ability to help somebody learn what I’ve done for 28 years.”
Our lower student to teacher ratios allow students to work closely with instructors and gain the skills and knowledge needed to sit for industry recognized credentials. Once earned, those credentials can help open doors of opportunity for jobs that are in demand. Jodi Coleman, Medical Assistant Instructor, often tells students “Medical Assisting today is just a wonderful opportunity for people starting in healthcare.”
Students and instructors alike agree that the hands-on training our programs provide are so important for success in today’s workforce. Public Safety Coordinator & Austintown Fire Chief, Andy Frost, believes there is something special about passing down his skills to the students. He says “I have a real passion for molding them and helping them become firefighters and probably my successor one day!” Molding that next generation depends on providing real world scenarios for them to learn from. Tom Metzinger, is a graduate from both Firefighter 1 and 2 programs and is a full-time firefighter with Austintown Fire Department. He says that live fire training is a “huge deal” because “there’s not as many fires as there used to be!” and “you get that experience here.”
Whichever field you choose, medical, culinary, or public safety and service, you can be in control of the success you can achieve in your future. Muriel Rhodes, a 2015 MCCTC Adult Culinary Graduate, recently said it best “It has really made me proud of myself! I have my career now! I would say “if you want to do it, you have the passion to do it – don’t stop, keep going!’”
