Cassandra Wasilewski

Exercise Science

My name is Cassandra Wasilewski and I am a senior in the Exercise Science and Pre-Physical Therapy tech lab. I am an active member of the National Technical Honor Society and Key Club here at school and an active member of the National Honor Society and the Bowling team back at Austintown Fitch High School. I am here today to talk about why MCCTC was the best decision I ever made. Most students at their home school do not get the certifications you can get here at MCCTC. You are certified in CPR and First Aid training by the end of your junior year. I came to the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center with a purpose in what I wanted to pursue as my future career. At the end of your senior year in the Exercise Science program, you can become a National Academy Sports Medicine (NASM) certified personal trainer and leave here and pursue personal training! There are so many opportunities here for everyone. If you do not think you will fit in, you will! There so many clubs here such as NTHS, Key Club, Student Council, Robotics, and more! The staff and teachers here care about you tremendously. Coming here and going into your lab of choice, you also leave here with college classes did that is within your lab! I have made the best and lifelong friends here at school. It is scary at first but you quickly adjust to it all. I hope you decide to come here to this amazing school, it is very well worth it!

Ever since coming to MCCTC my junior year, I have learned so much more about graphic design, the printing industry, and the workforce than I ever thought possible. Just in the first few weeks of starting my senior year, I was able to get a job in the graphics field making awesome graphics and products for people to enjoy. My knowledge of the graphics field and the workforce is thanks to the talented teachers at MCCTC.

Advanced Manufacturing Student

MCCTC has given me a lot of freedom to learn new and creative things. I’ve learned so much from my lab instructors and teachers. They’ve been a great help to us students during this time and even when it was normal. Being in the Advanced Manufacturing lab has taught me tons of new skills that I can graduate with. They’ve put my best interest in mind since I started here and always ask me “What do you want to walk away with in this lab?” I always tell them I want to step into mechanical engineering with both sides of knowledge, and that’s just what I’m doing. There’s tons of options and paths for us to walk. This has been the biggest part of mine.

Biomed has given me a place to discover who I am and grow into a better person. It's a place that embraces eccentricity and even encourages it. You have the opportunity to learn about anything you are passionate about. I have been able to look into bacteriophage therapy and plastic digesting mushrooms. It's a place like no other, and I hope people can experience it for years to come.

Alivia Rovder

Creative Arts Student

For years and years of my life, I have always been drawing and painting alongside my successful academics. For so long, I never even dreamed of attempting to make art into a career of my own. Though, despite my doubts, I kept drawing and painting. It became my whole world and everything I wanted to do. In middle school, it was hard for me to make friends and I did not fit in with the athletic environment of the school. So I went on to a STEM school. Attending the Mahoning Valley STEM+ME2 Academy was probably one of the best decisions I ever made in my life, despite having applied without my parents knowing about it. My parents had known I was unhappy in my previous school; getting bullied and struggling to make friends. They supported me and were proud of my initiative to make a change in my schooling, even if it took some convincing to get on board. The Valley STEM Academy led me to the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, which is where I was accepted into the Creative Arts and Design program for my Junior and Senior years of high school. Finally, this was a place where art was nurtured and supported. My teachers wanted me to have a career that I am passionate about and educated me about the potential careers of a modern artist. The decision to go after a career in the arts was even harder on my parents than joining a STEM school. STEM is seen as being the future, but a future of art only gave my family horrible ideas of me living in a cardboard box on the streets of New York City, trying to sell paintings made with diluted Skittles water. Coming from a family filled with nurses, I was nudged towards medical careers. I had the grades to do anything I wanted. I could be a doctor, lawyer, surgeon, scientist, dentist, accountant. The main concern of my parents is making lots and lots of money so I do not get stuck in a situation like them. I am a first-generation college student; my mother is a bartender and my father is a road worker. They only want me to succeed and lead a life with less stress over paying the bills than they have. After weeks of research and looking into different career paths, I came across a lesser-known artistic career that still has ties in the medical field and has the added benefit of helping individuals. I discovered art therapy. For the past five years of my life, I have been volunteering in various forms. I aid the elderly, I tutor children, I am the assistant instructor at a recreational horseback riding facility, I also help clean and care for the horses at this riding facility. This goes to show that I love helping others. I adore volunteering and it, along with the art I create, is something that keeps my spirits at their highest. Having a career like art therapy would allow me to help others express themselves. Easing the mental state of those who need it through various art mediums is the role of an art therapist. It is an ideal career for someone like myself, plus it is something that my family can support wholeheartedly.

Allied Health and Pre-Nursing student

When I had the option to come to MCCTC I was not for it at all but now that I've been here for two years I would recommend this school for everyone. I am in Allied Health and Pre-Nursing and you get so much out of this lab. You learn so much and will also help you get a head start for your career in the medical field. You can get your STNA (State tested Nursing Assistant.) certification your junior year and that's an amazing job to have while in high school. Senior year you will also get another certification which is CMA (Clinical medical assisting). There are so many other certifications you can get. So, If you have the option to come to MCCTC do it you will not regret it at all.
