Car show memorializes MCCTC grad

YOUNGSTOWN

More than 50 cars of all types and styles poured into the back parking lot at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center to memorialize a recently deceased graduate.

Tommy Bowers, 19, of Jackson-Milton High School, died in a car accident Sunday. He was the son of William T. and Lee Ann (Jarrett) Bowers and graduated from MCCTC this year.

Friends of Bowers hosted a car show Friday afternoon in honor of their friend for his last hurrah.

Students were asked for $5 donations to participate in the event.

A tearful Zach Signore, an MCCTC senior student and event coordinator, said the event was the best way to memorialize Bowers.

“Tommy was all about car shows,” Signore said. “On Monday, we decided we wanted to do something, and this was perfect.”

And the turnout was far beyond what he expected.

“People must have seen on Facebook because there were people here that weren’t even students here [at MCCTC],” Signore said. “It was really something.”

Jackson-Milton High 2016 graduate Devon Bortmas agreed that the event’s turnout was phenomenal.

“I’m glad everyone got together today,” he said. “They came together to support the loss of a friend.”

Bortmas said he remembers Bowers fondly.

“Tommy was just a great guy,” he said. “He was always willing to help anyone out.”

Andrew Wanstreet, 2016 graduate, agreed.

“He was one hell of a guy,” he said. “Everyone liked him. It was hard not to like him.”

MCCTC truck and diesel instructor Joe Merritt said in a statement, “We all loved Tommy, and he left a lasting impression on not only us but this school as a whole.”

Besides his parents, survivors include his grandparents, Thomas and Norma Jarrett and Sharon Bowers; aunts Laurie Bowers and Christine (Tony) Mari; as well as a host of friends.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel. Services begin at 2 p.m.
