Machine Shop Internship

View

JOB TITLE: Machine Shop Internship

PAY: $10.00-11.72/hour

DESCRIPTION: Reports to: Cost Center Manager – Ken Fisher Duration: Summer (3 months) Minimum Working Hours during Summer = 30 hours Approximate shift: 7AM-3:30PM (30 minute lunch, two 10 minute breaks) I. Description of the intern's role Working off of a continuing project from the manufacturing engineer and methods technician within the machine shop, the individual’s role will be to continue with the open project for reducing the overall setup in the machine by utilizing data entry and cataloging of all of the machine tools used. Inputting this data into the database for the tool pre-setter equipment will reduce the machine setup time by having a full library of tools and their offsets to electronically program the equipment during start-up of the job. Current process on machines that do not utilize this function is to manually define offsets, etc. within the machine. In addition, Set-Up sheets for the various products machined in the department are relatively old and outdated. The intern’s role would therefore also consist of utilizing a new and modified set-up sheet and to put the current data into this new format via Microsoft Word. This will allow for easier access and set-up of the machines by additional personnel within the department to fully utilize each operator and to overall increase productivity and throughput through the department. II. Specific goals and objectives a) Gather data about assemblies, tool manufacturers, tool offset data, setup procedures, and more b) Data analysis and preparation c) Input data into word processing documents and specific software applications for tool pre- setter equipment d) Verify information with different internal departments and key employees e) Prepare reports and present results to management f) Procure any necessary supplies (tools, bins, etc.) for the project via SAP purchase requisitions g) Once data is in the software database, utilize this data by decreasing setups for one specific machine (machine TBD). III. Who will provide daily supervision, what are their qualifications to teach the planned learning? Daily supervision, as well as mentoring, is provided by Ken Fisher, Methods Engineer and Cost Center Manager. Ken is a certified journeyman machinist and has 25+ years’ experience as a machinist. Ken has very extensive knowledge of not only standard machining practices and next practice ideas, but also mainly of the hundreds upon hundreds of different Altronic machining assemblies. Within the past year, Ken has become the Cost Center Manager for the department and has experience in managing individuals and their performance. Ken has been working with Altronic specifically for the past 26 years. In addition, the local GPMO will interface directly with the interns to assist with the project management aspects relating to time management, project management skills, charting, and more. IV. What plans are in place for the intern to participate in American cultural activities? ? Altronic foster’s not only international interns but also local interns from the local university. Having a diverse internship program helps to foster a culture for the interns to learn from one another on a professional level and to also socially interact outside of the office. With the close proximity to the city downtown and with local representation of local interns understanding the suburb locations, interns are able to gather socially to experience the American culture relating to restaurants, museums, concerts, sporting events, and more. Also, with a close proximity to the larger cities of Cleveland and Pittsburgh, the social experience grows even further. V. What specific knowledge skills or techniques will be learned? ? Applying skills obtained through universities in a real-life manufacturing environment ? Having a direct reporting structure to keep action items on track ? Learning to self-motivate in order to stay on track for specific assignments ? Self-management and time-management ? Presentation skills (incl. several status update presentations in front of GPMO and management) ? Use of SAP MRP system to collect data ? Interfacing with management, engineers, and operators to learn to communicate effectively ? Project Management VI. How specifically, will these knowledge skills or techniques be taught (specific tasks/activities for the intern)? ? Set up project plan incl. scope, objectives, timelines and work packages. ? Project Management / Controlling – Monitor status of project and escalate when needed ? Provide methodology / process to gather required data within SAP ? Expert interviews – with engineers and management in various functional roles (operations, supply chain, logistics, manufacturing engineering, supervisors, etc.) ? Regular presentation of project status in front of GPMO and/or management ? Working closely at first with the methods technician and the methods engineer of the department ? In general, a very hands-on approach, giving the student a lot of freedom and flexibility in the work environment, while guiding them by providing specific goals and support whenever needed. VII. How will the interns’ acquisition of new skills and competencies be measured? ? Regular review of project plan / project status (project on-time, on-quality on-cost?) ? Regular feedback rounds to evaluate and discuss performance development with the student
