Biotechnology - Program Description

Biotechnology is a growing field in science using living cells and materials produced by cells to create pharmaceutical, diagnostic, agricultural, environmental and other products to benefit society. It is both a cutting-edge technology and an applied science. Biotechnology is one of the most important applied sciences of the 21st century. Students selected for this program must have a strong academic background, especially in science. Biotechnology/Biomedical Research and Design is the study of careers invovled in therapeutic and medical research and development. This field includes biotechnology research and development that applies to human health. Many students that take Biotechnology are interested in the medical profession.

Students in this program will learn:

  • Cell culturing
  • Technical writing
  • Chemical and biohazard materials handling and safety
  • Microbiology
  • Bioinformatics
  • Computer applications for biotechnology
  • Advanced biology; chemistry
